Leather restoration & textile care
An authored leather sofa that is patinated, damaged or discoloured is not at the end of its life. A 1980s Ligne Roset Togo whose leather has turned matte, a Cassina LC2 whose aniline has shifted, a Tobia Scarpa Soriana with a failed seam, a B&B Camaleonda whose foam has compressed: those pieces hold value, because their inner structure, their architecture, their high-density foam signature were engineered to last several decades. Vintage patina is part of the object and adds to its value. A hole, a tear or a leather that has turned brittle, on the other hand, calls for a precise technical intervention. This page documents how we refurbish signature leather sofas, how our buyback program works on those pieces even when damaged, and which products to use at home to preserve a leather over the long run.
Why vintage leather lasts
The leathers used by Italian and French manufacturers between the 1960s and the 1990s are not comparable to the bonded leathers that dominate today's entry and mid-range furniture market. Historical Ligne Roset Togo is upholstered in Pampas leather, a mass-dyed full-grain leather with a visible natural grain, chosen for its softness and its ability to patinate without flaking. Cassina LC2 and LC3 editions ship in aniline leather, dyed all the way through without surface pigmentation, which lets the colour evolve over time while keeping the grain intact. Tobia Scarpa Soriana and certain Bellini Bambole rely on aniline or semi-aniline leathers of the same family. Early Camaleonda were upholstered in oiled leather, richer in natural oils, with a characteristic touch.
These materials survive thirty, forty, fifty years of domestic use because they were tanned cleanly and can be fed and rehydrated over time. Bonded leather, by contrast — a binder of fibres glued onto a backing — loses cohesion within five to ten years, flakes, peels and is neither repairable nor nourishable. That difference in raw material explains why a 1970s signature sofa deserves restoration when a contemporary bonded-leather sofa simply needs replacing. Investing upholstery hours into a Togo or an LC2 makes sense. Investing the same hours into bonded leather does not.
The four issues we treat regularly
Holes and tears. Depending on size, location and age of the piece, we choose between three interventions. For a small hole under two centimetres in a low-stress area, we fill and pigment-retouch in the original tone. For a longer but well-located tear, we harvest a leather graft from a non-repairable piece of the same edition and inset it with a sub-edge stitch followed by a retouch. For tears longer than ten centimetres, leather that has gone too dry, or a highly visible location, we route to a full recover by a specialist upholsterer or to the official Ligne Roset recover service when the piece is a Togo. The decision is always made on photos and on a tactile assessment in the workshop.
Discolouration and sun fading. An LC2 aniline leather sat next to a south-facing window will eventually lose the depth of its original tone. Two routes. Either fading is uniform and coherent, and we keep it as legitimate patina — many collectors prefer leather that has lived to leather that has been re-inked. Or fading is partial, marked on one side, and we re-ink with a specialist pigmentation retouch in thin, controlled coats to even the tone without masking the grain.
Dry and cracked leather. Leather that has gone thirty years without care eventually hardens and surface-cracks. The first step is deep rehydration: Renapur applied over several days to reintroduce missing fats, then a final feed with Saphir Médaille d'Or wax to close the grain. That intervention often makes the leather usable again. When cracking has cut into the grain in depth, rehydration alone is not enough and we route to a recover.
Tired high-density foam. On a Togo, the multi-density signature Ligne Roset foam is what makes the seating — replacing it with a standard foam destroys both comfort and value. When seating has compressed, we work either with the official Ligne Roset recover service or with an upholsterer that holds the correct foam densities. On an LC2, the adjustment is simpler because the strap and cushion are independent from the chromed tubular frame.
Our process
Inspection. Every piece that arrives in the workshop first goes through a full inspection. We assess the inner structure (wood frame, tubular frame or base fabric depending on the manufacturer), the state of straps or inner shell, the state of the high-density foam, and the leather itself: softness, grain, tone, point defects. Every defect is photographed before intervention.
Dismantling on modular pieces. On modular pieces like the B&B Camaleonda or some LC2, we dismantle modules to treat them individually, check inner fixings and access base seams.
Localised repair or full recover. The arbitrage is made case by case. A localised retouch takes a few hours and preserves the original leather. A full recover takes several days and changes the material but rebuilds a usable seat for twenty more years.
Softness and strength test. Before photography and delivery, every piece goes through a seating and a stitch test. Any piece that shows the slightest structural give returns to the workshop.
Warranty. All our pieces ship with a 12-month hidden-defects warranty after delivery.
Buyback program
LAPIERRE MARKET buys signature sofas back even when damaged. A Togo with a torn-through module, a Soriana that needs a full recover, an LC2 with a failed strap: as long as the inner structure and the base fabric are sound, the piece keeps its value. Free assessment within 72 hours from photos. To submit a piece, the resale form takes three minutes.
Daily care advice
The recommendations below are the ones we apply in the workshop and pass on to clients who want to maintain their piece between two visits.
Sappo Saphir for smooth leathers like Togo Pampas. Apply every six months with a soft cloth in circular motion, in very thin coats. Sappo feeds, softens and prevents cracking without leaving a greasy film.
Saphir cleansing milk followed by Saphir Médaille d'Or wax for aniline leathers like LC2 and Soriana. The milk lifts surface particles without disturbing the through-dye; the wax closes the grain and gives the slightly lustrous finish typical of those editions.
Renapur for vintage leathers that have gone dry. To be used occasionally and always after a patch test on a hidden area — Renapur is a rich balm that can slightly darken a light leather.
Real hard Marseille soap for stains on Togo fabrics (Alcantara, jute, linen, microfibres). Dilute a shaving in a little lukewarm water, apply with a soft cloth by dabbing, never by rubbing. Dabbing preserves the fibre.
Diluted white vinegar for water marks and rings on natural fibres. One part vinegar to four parts water, applied with a cloth, air-dry.
To avoid in all circumstances. Industrial solvents, supermarket ammonia wipes, hard brushes on leather, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, immediate proximity to a radiator or stove. Leather tolerates neither chemical aggression nor thermal shock.

Frequently asked
Frequently asked.
Which leather sofas do you refurbish?
Mainly authored pieces: Togo Ligne Roset (Pampas and patinated leather), LC2-LC3 Cassina, Soriana Tobia Scarpa, Camaleonda B&B, Le Bambole Bellini. Any signed piece is of interest if the structure and high-density foam are sound.
Can you repair a hole or a tear?
Yes. Depending on size and location, we either graft original leather harvested from a non-repairable piece, or combine pigmentation retouch with a structural fill. For tears longer than 10 cm or leather that has gone too dry, we route to a full recover by a specialist upholsterer or by the official Ligne Roset recover service.
How much does a leather restoration cost?
It depends on initial condition and the surface area involved. A localised retouch takes a few hours of work; a full set takes several days. We quote on photos before any intervention.
Which products should I use for daily care?
On smooth leather like Togo Pampas: Sappo Saphir every six months to feed and soften. On aniline leather LC2 / Soriana: Saphir cleansing milk followed by Médaille d'Or wax for the finish. Renapur on very dry vintage leathers. Avoid solvents, ammonia wipes and hard brushes.
What about stains on a fabric Togo?
Real Marseille soap (the hard bar), diluted in lukewarm water, applied with a soft cloth by dabbing, never by rubbing. Diluted white vinegar for water marks on natural fibres. A patch test on a hidden area is mandatory.
Do you buy back heavily damaged sofas?
Yes for signature pieces. A Togo, Soriana or LC2 keeps a value even with torn leather or tired foam, as long as the inner structure and base fabric are sound. Free assessment within 72 hours from photos.
