Edra

Edra is a contemporary Italian edition house founded in Perignano (Tuscany) in 1987 by Valerio and Monica Mazzei. Its catalogue, deliberately restricted and developed in close collaboration with Francesco Binfaré, the Campana brothers, Gaetano Pesce and Masanori Umeda, defends a radical approach to sofa furniture: soft structures, woven cords, sculptural forms, high-end materials. The Standard sofa (1989) and Boa (2002) sit among the most striking pieces of contemporary Italian design. LAPIERRE sources recent Edra pieces secondhand for the Paris and European market.

Brand history

Edra was founded in 1987 in Perignano, Tuscany, by Valerio and Monica Mazzei. The house was built from the start around the collaboration with Francesco Binfaré, former director of the Cassina Centro Ricerche (1969-1976), where he had coordinated projects with Gaetano Pesce, Mario Bellini, Vico Magistretti, Tobia Scarpa. Binfaré brought to Edra his radical approach to the sofa: replace the traditional rigid internal frame with a soft structure articulated in several zones, following the user's posture without creating pressure points. The Standard sofa was released in 1989 and has remained the catalogue's pillar.

Edra collaborated in parallel with brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana (Brazilian designers) from the 1990s. The Campanas introduced a raw, material approach: Vermelha (1998) with woven cotton cord on a steel armature, Boa (2002) with rope cushioning coiled on a foam structure, Cabana, Anemone. Masanori Umeda signed Cannaregio (with Pesce) and several other pieces. Gaetano Pesce, historically a Cassina collaborator, also signed for Edra several 1980s-90s sofas and the I Feltri chair.

Manufacturing remains centralised in Perignano, in a workshop where each piece is partially assembled by hand. Selected materials are high-end: Italian tanned leathers, Hermès and Loro Piana textiles, mixed wood-steel structures, specific high-density foams. The deliberately small catalogue (around twenty models) favours signature-piece logic over commercial breadth.

Signature pieces we source

Standard (Francesco Binfaré, 1989). Modular sofa with soft structure free of rigid internal frame, with independently articulated zones. Edra's absolute signature piece. Available in 2-seat, 3-seat, modular large versions. Edra leather or Loro Piana fabric.

Absolu (Binfaré). Successor to Standard, even more enveloping. Same structural principles.

Sherazade (Binfaré). Sculptural sofa-bed with soft structure.

Boa (Campana brothers, 2002). Sofa with rope cushioning coiled spiral-style, python-like. Exceptional piece, rare in arrivals.

Vermelha (Campana brothers, 1998). Armchair with visible steel structure and woven red or multicolour cotton cord.

Cabana (Campana brothers). Armchair with raffia-fringe envelope.

Tatlin (Mario Cananzi & Roberto Semprini, 1989). Sofa in homage to Tatlin's monument, curved structure with leather cushioning.

I Feltri (Gaetano Pesce, 1987). Chair with pressed wool felt structure, signed Pesce for Cassina and present in some Edra collaborations.

Authenticating an original

Three points support authentication of an Edra piece. Marking: Edra label sewn onto the upholstery, with model name and sometimes serial number. On Boa and Vermelha pieces, label sits inside the structure. Materials: Italian tanned leathers with specific patina, identifiable supplier textiles (Loro Piana, Hermès, Edra exclusives), regular-grain Vermelha woven cotton cord. Seat behaviour: the Standard's soft structure, free of rigid internal frame, is immediately identifiable to the touch — no hard spots. A stiff piece is likely a copy or replica.

LAPIERRE process for this brand

The Edra protocol at LAPIERRE first evaluates material consistency and marking authenticity. For Standard and Absolu, internal foam (density, elasticity) and leather checks. For Boa and Vermelha, cord coiling and steel structure checks. Cleaning is entrusted to a specialist leather workshop. Pieces with severely tired upholstery can be entrusted to a recover workshop working in high-end Italian leathers, with Edra marking preserved.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the origin of Edra?
Edra was founded in 1987 in Perignano, Tuscany, by Valerio and Monica Mazzei. From the start the house positioned itself in the high segment of contemporary Italian furniture, working closely with Francesco Binfaré (former director of the Cassina design centre) and with radical designers: Gaetano Pesce, Masanori Umeda, Fernando and Humberto Campana, Jacopo Foggini. The catalogue is deliberately small, each piece developed over several years to a craft manufacturing standard. Production remains centralised in Perignano.
Which Edra pieces are most iconic?
The Standard sofa by Francesco Binfaré (1989), with its soft structure free of rigid internal frame, and its successor Absolu, remain the absolute signature pieces of the catalogue. Sherazade (Binfaré), Boa (Campana brothers, 2002, with rope cushioning), Cabana, Vermelha (Campana brothers, 1998, woven cotton cord structure), and Tatlin (Mario Cananzi & Roberto Semprini) are also references. On the Pesce side, Edra edits Cannaregio and several 1980s-90s sofas.
How do you authenticate an Edra sofa?
An authentic Edra piece carries an Edra label sewn onto the upholstery or applied to the internal structure, sometimes with a serial number. Manufacturing is fully done in Perignano with high-end materials: mixed wood-steel structure, high-density foams, Italian tanned leather or haute couture textiles (Hermès, Loro Piana). Copies of signature models (notably Standard and Boa) circulate and can be recognised by lower material quality and absence of Edra marking. The weight and seat behaviour of an authentic piece are noticeably superior.
Which vintage Edra pieces do you source?
Our sourcing prioritises recent secondhand pieces: Standard and Absolu (Binfaré), Sherazade, Boa and Vermelha (Campana brothers), Cabana, and more rarely Pesce or Umeda pieces. The house being relatively young (1987) and the catalogue deliberately small, genuinely vintage 1990s pieces are infrequent in French arrivals. We mainly source 2000s-2010s pieces in good condition.
How much does a used Edra Standard or Boa sofa cost?
Edra positions its pieces in the very high segment of contemporary furniture. A new piece represents a significant investment, and the secondhand market retains a substantial share of that value. A 3-seat Standard in original leather in good condition typically prices 30 to 50 percent below new. The Boa and Vermelha, rarer, hold very high values. Edra marking and upholstery condition are the two main price drivers.
How is an Edra delivered to Paris?
Edra sofas are bulky and heavy (notably Standard and Absolu, which exceed 200 kg in 3-seat versions). Paris delivery requires insured transport and often two people for placement. For mainland France and Europe, a dedicated high-end furniture carrier. Prior verification of stair or lift access is systematic. Standard turnaround: 2 to 3 weeks depending on origin and destination.
