Galvanitas

Galvanitas — Dutch manufacturer of industrial and school furniture founded in 1933 — has produced for decades tubular lacquered steel chairs of a robustness that made them emblematic of post-war functional design. The S16, S22 and their variants equipped schools, workshops and canteens across Northern Europe.

Why vintage Galvanitas at LAPIERRE

LAPIERRE Galvanitas selection focuses on original 1960-1980 pieces, sourced in coherent sets. The lacquered steel tubular structure is built to last; we restore the paint where required, respecting original RAL codes. Seats and backs in moulded plywood are checked and re-slung as needed.

Iconic models we source

  • S16: most widespread school model, fine tubular structure, curved moulded plywood seat
  • S22: reinforced variant with cross-brace, more robust, often workshop-grade
  • Tall variants: stools and bar chairs in the same family
  • Mixed sets: 4-12 chairs, mono-colour or mixed period colours

Recognising authenticity

The Galvanitas stamp is typically present under the seat. Factory welds are clean and homogeneous. The original palette is recognisable by its depth and by the epoxy lacquer quality. Modern reissues use thinner steel and less durable paint.

LAPIERRE process for Galvanitas

We source as coherent sets in France and the Netherlands. Each chair is inspected, paint redone where needed, seat checked and re-slung. Delivered assembled across France and Europe.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Galvanitas?
Galvanitas is a Dutch manufacturer founded in the 1930s, specialised in industrial and school furniture made of tubular lacquered steel. The S16, S22 and their variants became Dutch design icons of the 1960-1980 period, prized for their stackability, original colour palette and near-indestructible structure.
How to identify an authentic Galvanitas chair?
Several markers: a Galvanitas stamp under the seat, factory tubular welds, the characteristic colour palette (wagon green, mustard yellow, graphite grey, sand beige), and a moulded plywood seat with a factory stamp. Modern reissues use a slightly different welding process and plywood.
Which models do you source at LAPIERRE?
Mainly the S16 and S22, sourced as coherent sets for kitchens and dining rooms, sometimes mono-colour, sometimes mixed period colours. Stackable, restored when needed (paint redone in original RAL, seat reslung).
