Renting a USM Haller for a Paris Shoot

Art directors looking for furniture that is recognisable, neutral and good on camera often choose USM Haller. The system immediately suggests modern design, architecture or the creative studio. Renting one for a shoot means knowing what it brings to the frame and planning for Paris logistics. Here are the questions that come up most often in the rental requests we receive.

Why USM turns up on so many shoots

Briefs usually give three reasons.

First, modularity. The same module reconfigures as a low sideboard, console, bookcase or bench. A team can run several setups in one day without changing furniture. The time saved shows directly in the cost of a studio hired by the hour.

Then, the neutral palette. USM colours are low in saturation, read well on camera and suit most current art directions. Anthracite, light grey and pure white hold against light and dark backgrounds alike; bolder colours such as ruby red or USM green work as accents.

Finally, recognition. A USM is recognisable on camera, even blurred in the background, and places the brand or subject in a design setting without spelling it out.

The requests we receive

They fall into four broad groups.

Fashion lookbooks, particularly around Paris fashion weeks, where USM serves as a neutral support for the garment. Magazine editorials, often playing USM against vintage or organic objects. Brand campaigns, where the furniture sits within an interior or creative-office narrative. Product shoots, where USM provides neutral, structured planes for technology, beauty or accessory product staging.

Requests for video have grown recently: podcast sets, short social media formats, brand films.

Logistics: what to anticipate

Booking lead time

A USM rental needs preparation. We ideally request several working days between confirmation and delivery, to block modules, validate configuration and set the transport slot. On busy dates (fashion weeks, design fairs, the end of the year), the lead time gets longer. For an urgent shoot, contact us: depending on what is available, we can often find a solution, without guaranteeing it.

Configuration and colours

The ideal brief specifies: target dimensions, module count, element types (full doors, drop-fronts, drawers, open shelves), main and accent colours, and a visual reference where possible. We work from this brief to propose configurations available in our stock, or to adapt them on demand.

Two-colour combinations, for example an anthracite case with USM green drop-fronts, are possible but take longer to check.

Collection or delivery on site

There are two options.

Collection: you collect the furniture disassembled in panels and tubes, and assemble on-site. This suits productions with a technical team and a vehicle. It reduces rental cost.

Delivery and setup: we deliver assembled, or assemble at the shoot location. This suits shoots with little preparation time or difficult access. It is the most common choice in Paris.

Delivery windows

In Paris, delivery windows depend on studio or location vehicle access, building rules, and installer availability. A 9 a.m. shoot start typically requires evening-before delivery or an early-morning setup. For venues without proper access (private lofts, flats, short-let rentals), allow extra time to check the way in.

Transport and insurance

Modules travel in dedicated cases and covers. Transport is insured under conditions stated in the quote. During the shoot, the furniture remains under the production's responsibility: we ask for an appropriate insurance certificate, and a condition report is drawn up jointly on delivery and on return. Impacts, deep scratches or missing parts are costed at return, against a damage grid known in advance.

Return

Return mirrors delivery: a scheduled slot and a joint condition report. We collect the furniture disassembled or assembled per the original plan. Nothing is left on-site without explicit return arrangement.

How a rental works

A rental runs in five steps.

1. Brief. You send your request by email or via our rental page, with dates, location, target configuration and visual references if you have them.

2. Quote. We come back to you within 48 hours with a configuration proposal, a delivery option, a rate and a schedule. The quote is free and non-binding.

3. Confirmation. You validate. We block modules and the delivery slot. The rental is paid in full before delivery, by bank transfer or online on the site.

4. Delivery and shoot. We deliver and install per plan. During the shoot, you use the furniture freely, within the limits set by the insurance and the damage grid.

5. Return. We collect the furniture on the scheduled dates and draw up the condition report; any damage is invoiced against the grid known in advance.

Common pitfalls

Brief too late. Particular configurations take time, and a brief sent the day before leaves far fewer options than one sent a week ahead.

Underestimating access. A basement Paris studio without a freight lift, or a fifth-floor walk-up, does not receive a three-metre sideboard like a ground-floor loft. State access in the brief.

Confusing rental and purchase. A rental does not cover long-term use. If you want to keep the furniture, some modules can move from rental to purchase.

Forgetting the insurance certificate. Without one, we do not deliver, so arrange it in advance.

Where we work

Rental is aimed at productions, brands, studios and magazines. We work in Paris and the surrounding region, and occasionally elsewhere in France with a transport surcharge. If the configuration you want is not available, we can look for it or suggest a close equivalent.
