USM Haller reconfiguration

The system's dimensions haven't changed since 1963, so a current module fits a nineteen-seventies frame. That means your USM can be shortened, lengthened, split or given a new purpose.

When your life changes, there's no need to replace your USM Haller. You can shorten it, lengthen it, split it, add a level or move it from the living room to the office.

After a move, a change of use or a growing collection, it's the service we're asked for most. All it takes is respecting the logic of the system.

Why it is possible

In 1963 Fritz Haller designed a system rather than a piece of furniture, and its dimensions haven't changed since: a module bought today fits a nineteen-seventies frame.

We do raise two caveats before any quote.

The first is colour. Two panels of the same reference made twenty years apart aren't quite the same tone: as a direct extension the difference shows, whereas on a separate bay nobody notices.

The second is the connector balls. A frame rebuilt many times has tired joints: we check them and replace what needs it (see assembly and mechanical diagnosis).

What we reconfigure

  • Most often, we change the length by removing or adding bays.
  • A unit can go up or down one or more levels; above a certain height, it has to be fixed to the wall.
  • One unit can be split into two for two rooms, which sometimes takes a few extra end tubes and balls.
  • Rearranging the drop-down doors, drawers, suspension files or glazed compartment is what really changes how the unit is used.
  • To move from home to office, we take into account file loads, standing or seated access, cables and castors.
  • USMs from a buy-back often mix colours and generations: we can unify them, or keep a deliberate contrast.

How we proceed

  1. It starts with a survey: dimensions, module count, photographs, and measurements of the target space, skirting included.
  2. We then work out one or two target configurations on a plan, with the exact list of modules to add or remove.
  3. The plan is fixed before anything is bought, and the quote itemises labour and parts separately.
  4. Next we source the modules, second-hand or new depending on the colour and consistency you're after.
  5. The work is done on site, or in the workshop if the reconfiguration is a heavy one.

What we will not do

We don't cut panels, drill shelves or change a module's depth, because that destroys the unit's value and means there's no going back.

Nor do we mix non-USM components into a USM frame: similar dimensions aren't identical ones. If in doubt, an appraisal settles it before we start.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked.

  • Can a USM Haller bought twenty years ago be extended?

In the vast majority of cases, yes, because the dimensions haven't changed since the beginning. All that's left to check is the panel colour and the condition of the existing balls.

  • Should I buy new modules or second-hand ones?

Colour decides more than price. To extend the unit directly, a second-hand module of the same generation will match better; for a separate bay, a new one is fine.

  • My USM no longer fits my new flat. What are my options?

This is the commonest case. We can remove bays, reduce the height or turn one unit into two. The removed modules can go elsewhere, or we take them back.

  • What does a reconfiguration cost?

We don't have a flat fee. We quote from your photographs and measurements, itemising labour, the modules to acquire and, when the configuration changes its logic, the plan study.
