String Furniture

The String System — designed by Nisse Strinning in 1949 — redefined the domestic library. Its light structure, made of lacquered wire side panels and suspended solid wood shelves, laid the foundations of modern Scandinavian furniture.

Why vintage String at LAPIERRE

Vintage 1950-1970 String pieces are distinguished by the quality of their solid ash or walnut shelves, by the hand-brushed lacquer traces on the side panels, and by the patina of the wire. Our selection focuses on complete coherent configurations.

Iconic pieces we source

  • System String: classic white/black/grey lacquered panels + ash or walnut shelves
  • String Pocket: small version, ideal for entryway or office
  • String desk variant: with drop-leaf
  • String with closed compartments: sliding or hinged ash doors

Recognising authenticity

Period side panels often show subtle hand-brushed lacquer traces. Solid wood shelves sound full when tapped. A Strinning or String AB stamp is generally present under one shelf.

LAPIERRE process

We source coherent sets in France, Sweden and the Netherlands. Panels and shelves inspected, paint touched up if needed, every hook checked.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the String system?
The String System is a modular shelving unit designed by Nisse Strinning in 1949, winner of the international Swedish design competition. It consists of lacquered wire side panels (typically white, black or grey) and ash or walnut shelves hung on a grid. Light, fully modular, it has become a Scandinavian design reference and is still being produced.
How to date a String shelf?
Original 1950-1970 String pieces have hand-brushed lacquered side panels (visible traces), thick solid ash or walnut shelves, and a Strinning or String AB stamp under one shelf. Modern reissues use smoother industrial lacquer and veneer rather than solid wood on some references.
Which configurations do you source?
2-6 panel configurations, matching ash or walnut shelves, sometimes with closed compartments or desk drop-leaves (Strinning variants). Always sourced as coherent sets for immediate recomposition in a living room, office or library.
