02 — Shade

USM Haller anthracite grey is one of the signature shades of the modular system designed by Fritz Haller in 1965. Its colour reference is RAL 7016, the manufacturer code registered by USM in Münsingen. At LAPIERRE MARKET we deal exclusively in authenticated vintage USM: inspected ball joints, original panels, period screws; when a panel has been relacquered, the listing says so.

The anthracite grey shade is part of USM’s permanent catalogue. It has never been discontinued since 1965, which guarantees that new panels and accessories are still fully interchangeable with vintage configurations. It is also the easiest shade to repair or extend: if a panel is damaged, USM still supplies spare parts in the exact same colour reference.

How to place a USM anthracite grey at home

Anthracite grey sits especially well on light wood floors, polished concrete and natural stone. What to avoid: very saturated backgrounds that smother the modular system and hide the precision of the chrome ball joints. Our practice rule: a successful USM reads from a distance. Allow at least 40 cm of clearance on each side and indirect lighting to bring out the lacquer.

Low sideboards sit at 35 cm — ideal as a TV unit or entrance bench. Taller configurations (110 cm and above) work as bookshelves or as room dividers. Every piece is assembled on site in Paris — see our servicespage for assembly, disassembly and reconfiguration details.

Authentication and restoration

On every USM anthracite grey we acquire we check: ball joint markings (USM engraved, not printed, on the first generation), panel thickness, lacquer uniformity, period screws, serial numbers when they exist. We cross-check with the editor’s archives whenever possible. Full methodology on our dedicated USM Haller page.

Restoration stays minimal: gentle cleaning, retightening of balls, occasional replacement of a defective element. When a shade is too damaged, the whole panel is relacquered by a partner workshop, using the same process as the original paint, and the listing says so.

Delivery and installation

Paris: direct delivery by our team (assembly available on quote). France via our Cocolis partner. Europe via dedicated carrier. All configurations can be disassembled and reassembled for a move — that is the structural advantage of the Haller system. See our delivery page for timing and pricing.
